While personal preference is a factor, there are a few other things to consider when deciding if it’s time to replace your duvet set – and there are a few tips and tricks to help your bedding last longer too.
What makes your bedding not last as long
First let’s cover what makes your bedding deteriorate more quickly. Frequent washing*, using a dryer, excessive ironing and using fabric conditioner all contribute to a shorter lifespan of your quilt covers, pillowcases and bed sheets.
*It’s recommended to wash your bed linen every 7-10 days for hygienic reasons and to eliminate pesky dust mites, which can cause allergies.
Do you need new bedding?
There are a few tell-tale signs that it’s time to get new bedding and these are pretty obvious:
- Loose, fraying or pulled threads
- Faded colours
- Missing buttons (usually the result of a loose thread)
- When it starts to go ‘bobbly’
- Other permanent damage or stains
But beyond those, is there a real need to buy new bedding just because you’ve had an existing set for say, a few years? We’ve done some research to find out.
Get new bedding…when there’s a sale on
Yep, 21 percent of people in a 2014 survey by the Daily Mail revealed that they only buy new bedding when there’s a sale on. Luckily for you, we’ve practically got sale prices all year round at Lifestylish so you don’t need to worry about that.
Besides price and need though, there’s no recommended time period to buy new bedding. As long as it’s kept clean and well looked after (see below) you can keep your duvet sets as long as you want. That’s that mystery solved then!
How to make your bedding last longer
So how do you get the best bang for your buck and make sure your bedding lasts as long as possible?
- Use flat sheets to protect your duvet cover. Although they’ve somewhat gone out of fashion, flat sheets – the ones that get tucked over your fitted sheet and underneath your duvet cover – really help to prolong the life of your duvet cover by protecting it from sweat and cosmetic products like moisturisers and make up. It’s easier and cheaper to replace flat sheets too.
- Get multiple bed sets and rotate them. The more bed sets you have, the less often you’ll need to wash each.
- Avoid placing sharp objects on your bed as they can easily tear or pull the fabric. Ladies, the same goes for long or false nails…
- Go for cotton or polycotton bed sheets. Contrary to what you’d believe, cheaper bed sheets actually seem to last much longer – based on the many threads we read while researching this blog anyway!
